Through
the Ministry of Mission, First Presbyterian Church serves with those who
are poor, sick, and in need to create a more just and equitable world.
Our goal is to spread the message of God's love through service to our
neighbors in Spartanburg, in concert with denominational missions, and
around the world. We seek to meet immediate needs of people in crisis
through support of local agencies like T.O.T.A.L. Ministries,
Presbyterian missions like Hurricane Katrina Relief, and medical
missions to such places as the Dominican Republic. Equally, we strive to
address the root causes of problems in our world through after-school
programs in Spartanburg County, investment in affordable housing
initiatives like Habitat for Humanity, and dedicated prayer and study.
We sustain the role of the Presbyterian church in this work through
major investments in PC(USA) institutions of higher learning and church
leadership development programs such as Celtic Cross at Presbyterian
College. This is good news in Jesus: as children of God, across
differences of ethnicity, wealth, and nationality, we work together to
build God's kingdom of peace.
The Ministry of Mission is directed by the Mission Committee, which
focuses on three core areas of service:
- Local Missions address needs in
Spartanburg and the South Carolina Upstate, allying with many local
social service agencies and fellow Presbyterian churches.
- Church-at-Large Missions support
denominational missions and church leadership development initiatives
through PC(USA) institutions, including the Celtic Cross Program at
Presbyterian College, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and Thornwell
Home for Children in Clinton, SC.
- National & International Missions reach
out across the globe through missionary support and mission trips,
providing assistance to people in places like the Dominican Republic and
Costa Rica, joining Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Mississippi, and
participating in the Foothills Presbytery partnership with Kwahu
Presbytery in Ghana.
