We have many programs and activities available for adults listed on this page (see also: Choir, Recreation, and Wednesdays at First). Look carefully through this list and see where God is calling you to grow in your faith.

Sunday School

Classes for adults are offered every Sunday morning from 9:45m to 10:45 a.m. (between regular worship services). Read First News for weekly topics and teachers.

Class Name Meeting Place Class Description
Agnus Dei Room 2210 A 30-minute class (10:00 –10:30) to accommodate choir members. We come together to reflect on Biblical texts and to act on what we discover there, guided by the International Bible Lesson for Christian Teaching. Teachers are Bill Burns and Malinda Willard.
Christian Perspectives Room 212 Class members study a variety of topics related to the Bible, the Christian faith and Reformed tradition, the Presbyterian Church, the Christian life, and Christianity in the world. They investigate issues, not only from a Christian perspective, but also from other cultures' perspectives. Discussion leaders are Joe Dunn, Kyle Keefer, Nan McDaniel, and John Verreault.
College and Career Large Private Dining Room(Fogartie Hall) Come be a part of a fun time of Bible study, food, and fellowship each Sunday morning. Mallory Beckett, Doug Campbell and Scott Neely lead this group of young adults.
Faith Builders Room 210 A class for young married couples through age 35. Neighbors and friends warmly welcomed. Led by Jennifer Biber, Lynn Edwards, Kam Neely, and Currie Renwick.  
Faith Practitioners Room 214 Find friends and inspiration in this seminar class format. The mission of the class is to study and learn scripture for application in everyday living. A dedicated team of coordinators and expert teachers add variety and depth to practicing faith. Teachers are Roy Berry and Calvin Wicker.
Fellowship Class Room 2212 All ages feel at home with this loyal group led by Tom McDaniel as they study 1 Corinthians. Pastors occasionally serve as guest teachers.
Horizons Room 2207 Adults in their late 30's and 40's connect faith to life through study, socials, and service. Primary teachers is Stan Lummus.
Ladies' Chapel Class Chapel A warm, caring group of women study the Bible and fellowship together. They welcome new members. Their talented and dedicated team of teachers bring depth and breadth to their study – Marc Wall, De Calvert, Bert Moore.
Men's Bible Class Purnell Room For a hymn sing and an excellent Bible lesson, join this faithful and lively group that has met together for many years.  Their talented and dedicated team of teachers bring depth and breadth to their study --  Ed Walpole, De Calvert, Marc Wall.
Open Class Room 2216 A round-table discussion of Christian themes in literature. This class is open to all ages and all points of view. Led by Kamran Popkin and Denise Stevens.
Spiritual Life Class Room 2201 Bible study for spiritual growth is the aim of this group of 30 and 40-somethings. David facilitates. Teachers include Nancy Cote, Bubba Littlejohn, Juli Robertson, David Tate, Nancy Tiller, and Allison Wilson.
Truth Seekers Room 2208 Led by Art McQueen and Betty Williams, this Bible-based discussion class of mixed ages meets in Room 2208.

Companions in Christ
A new small-group experience of spiritual formation for women, introducing basic spiritual practices. Meets in the parlor on the first and third Monday evenings of each month.

Believing in God
A weekly women's discipleship Bible study with small group discussion and video lectures with author Beth Moore. Meets Tuesday mornings, 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. on the second floor rooms of the Family Life Center. Study coordinator:  Nancy Tiller

Tuesdays at noon
A book discussion group with a focus on spiritual formation. Many professional women attend on their lunch hour. This fall they are reading Receiving the Day: Christian Practices for Opening the Gift of Time by Dorothy Bass.

Christians in the Making  
Lynn Edwards and Jennifer Biber lead a lively group of women Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in the church library. Join them as they study The Ten Commandments from the Backside.

The Ongoing Journey - Year 3
A 30-week series of teaching by Erilynn Barnum on DVD and small group Bible Study that helps apply scripture to everyday living. Contact: Martha Foster.

Mom to Mom
A discussion of the encouraging and light-hearted book Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World during the children’s choir Wednesday night rehearsals. (5:15-5:55) Meets in Room F201 in the Family Life Center.

Discovering the Bible
Pastors take turns leading this 30-week Kerygma Bible study course from 9:30 -11:00a.m.  on Thursday mornings.

The Fifth Annual Women's Retreat, Walking in the Light,  will be held on February 22-24, 2008 at The Cove near Asheville, North Carolina. Our guest speaker is Sharon Decker of Rutherfordton, NC.

All women of the congregation are invited to join one of our 10 active Presbyterian Women Circles to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study, to support the mission of the church worldwide, and to build a caring community of women.

Presbyterian Men  (back to top)

 

Presbyterian Men is a national organization whose aim is to lead men into a vital relationship with Christ and to assist them in their spiritual, personal, and community development. Plans are underway to begin a Presbyterian Men’s Bible study and fellowship group for men that will meet quarterly. Contact: Dick Mahon, 583-6424.

Couples of all ages joined our Marriage Enrichment Weekend at First Presbyterian Church on January 11-12, 2008 with husband and wife team Jim Shores and Carol Anderson-Shores, professional actors and gifted facilitators known as “Acts of Renewal”
